passport  Passports, Driver’s Licenses, Real ID’s

In planning a mini get-away to Maine near the Canadian border I realized that my passport from 35 years ago had long since expired and no longer can we cross the Canadian border with just our driver’s licenses.  Of course my plans were decided upon almost last minute so after some research I learned that a passport could be had in short order with a little effort, and of course an added fee.

Interestingly, the Rite-Aid sign near my office encouraged folks to get their passport pictures there for a minimal fee.  Now, I typically never pay attention to that sign so knew that was meant for us to pay attention to. We now had 2×2 photos with the correct background, pixels, expressions and no glasses.  It was so much quicker and easier than my trying to do it myself.

I made appointments in Portsmouth to quickly submit the right forms with all the correct info on them.  In preparation, I had to dig through all the saved “important” documents to find a certified birth certificate and information on my martial history. I put three different birth certificate copies and several other papers in a folder in hopes of having all the needed answers. Most were unnecessary but I didn’t need to go home and find more info to return with!  Choices were given as to how we could receive the actual booklets, pick them up or have them mailed.  Not wanting to take chances with the postal system we enjoyed a pleasant ride the following day, got the passports in hand. That task is crossed off the To Do list for ten years.

At present, passports come in a booklet form that is good for all travel and as a card with limited use.  You can purchase both or either of them.

Another type of ID you may want to know about is the Real ID that you will need to have to replace your current Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID cards by October 1, 2020. For more information on that:
